For those who are considering marriage counseling, the first thing they do is go online. There is no shortage of sites offering various lists of counselors, but you should be careful; most of these sites simply contain lists of those who have paid to place advertisements there. That's not necessarily a bad thing; everyone has to advertise so that people know they're there. But the fact that an advertisement exists tells you nothing about the experience or qualifications of the counselor.
There are, however, some sites to begin with that might point you in the direction of well-qualified, reputable counselors.
- American Counseling Association: This is the world's largest association representing professional counselors. On the Resources page, click Find a Counselor, which will take you to a landing page from where you can find a Nationally Certified Counselor. This will take you to a form for filling out your location and counseling needs, leading to a list of certified counselors in your area.
- American Association of Christian Counselors: For those seeking Christian-based marriage counseling, the AACC is the place to begin. Go to the home page, click Find a Counselor, then click the gold button on the Resource page which reads Find a Counselor. It will then allow you to search either by zip code or state.
- Marriage Counseling Guide: Our directory contains an extensive list of marriage counselors in the US and Canada. You can find a counselor in almost all cities and states using our Find a Marriage Counselor search page. This allows you to filter the results as per your specific needs. After you have found some counselors in your area, be sure to read more about them and send them an email right now. That's free!
