Many people are qualified to counsel troubled marriages—priests and rabbis, for example, must take classes in marriage counseling, and tribal elders are often asked to intervene—but not every person who does marriage counseling is a licensed marriage counselor. Licensed marriage counselors, unlike clergy and others, have an educational background that qualifies them for work with family systems and relationships.
