When one partner is dissatisfied with an aspect of the relationship, he or she will usually blame the other partner. But when there is another thing available to blame, such as a bad economy, the couple may shift the blame (and associated feelings of shame or failure) to the external factor, resulting in a stronger relationship.

The findings of a study showing that busy wives have happier marriages may be due to several causes: the success women find at work may lead to greater self-esteem, which leads to more happiness in other parts of their lives; also, the husbands may participate more in household chores, which makes them seem more reliable.

A new study shows that the number of people who choose to live together without getting married has more than doubled in the past several decades. The research, from the Pew Research Center, also notes that compared to couples who are married, those who live together are financially more solvent- but only if they have a college degree. Of the couples studied who held college degrees, nearly 80% were in relationships where each partner contributed financially.
